Caroline Lucas, Green

Green party leader (MEP & Brighton Pavillion PPC),
Caroline Lucas' endorsement and reply

Question 1: Do you agree in principle with the aforementioned policy?*
*no commitment to act upon the policy

Answer - "The Green Party absolutely agrees with the principle of fairer taxation aimed at the redistribution of wealth. It is wrong that the richest 10% of the population are 100 times better off than the poorest 10% and we want to urgently address this through policies like those detailed above".

Question 2: In a generic sense, do you believe that the rich should pay more tax and the poor should pay less tax?

Answer - "Yes. At present those on lower incomes pay disproportionately more tax than those on higher incomes, so we need to instead introduce a tax system that ensures those who can better afford to pay do so. And there is increasing evidence that the majority of the public agree with this approach too".

Question 3: If you are elected as an MP, do you pledge to campaign for income tax reform at the next parliament?*
*not necessarily as specified with the above policy

Answer - "I am very happy to pledge that if elected to represent the people of Brighton Pavilion I will fight for fairness and campaign for income tax reform".

Caroline Lucas has officially endorsed our campaign. In doing so, she has become the first UK party leader to support our project (in principle). Thank you Caroline!

FTC - About us

The Fairer Tax Campaign (FTC) is a not-for-profit and non-partisan project that supports national income tax reform. We are in favour of enhancing progressive taxation and wealth redistribution. The aforementioned objectives are more important than our proposed policy changes. We have been canvassing politicians running for parliament for their views on the matter, with progressive replies uploaded on to the blog. The reason being, that we want to transparently document politicians' stances and make the public aware of them. We feel that this is important, as it shows people where the politicians stand. In effect, we are attempting to promote the debate of an important issue, while also keeping the public informed.

Our motto:
"The rich should pay more and the poor should pay less".

We believe that
Britain needs to become collectively fairer. The gap between the rich and the poor has continued to grow for decades, which has only served to create a divided society. This is unacceptable for a developed country with one of the largest economies in the world. More needs to be done to tackle the aforementioned disparity. Fairer income tax is part of the solution.

We propose that that the tax free personal allowance threshold be raised to £10,000 for anyone earning less than £18,000 a year. This will be subsidised by reducing the threshold for the 50% tax rate from £150,000 to £100,000. It will ensure that the rich pay more and the poor pay less.

---

As it stands (2010-2011):

Basic Rate: £0-£37,400 (20%)
High Rate: £37,401-£150,000 (40%)
Additional Rate: Over £150,000 (50%)

This includes a tax free personal allowance of £6,475 for all income up to £100,000.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm

Our proposed change (2011-2012 onwards):

i) Additional Rate:
Over £100,000 (50%)

ii)
A tax free personal allowance of £10,000 for anyone earning up to £17,999 a year. The allowance level will remain at £6,475 for those that earn between £18,000 and £100,000.
